Incident is a continuation of my documentation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex lives. Incident will record the spaces where hate crimes have happened across Europe with a strong focus on Ireland and the UK.
In 1982 in Dublin, Ireland, Declan Flynn was murdered in Fairview Park by a group of men who were attacking individuals if they perceived them to be gay. These 5 men were later given suspended sentences with the judge stating in his closing remarks “this could never be regarded as murder as they were cleaning up the area”. It is worth noting that homosexuality was not decriminalized in Ireland until 1993 but the gay rights movement started in Ireland after Declan Flynn’s case.
I have started with the crimes committed in the 80’s and I am working towards bringing them up to present day, in collaboration with the victims or their families.
Currently in Ireland we have no hate crime legislation. I would like to add to the discourse on this subject with the new work.
Do get in touch if you'd like to collaborate or know more about the project.
